6.9 magnitude earthquake hits Tibet near India-China border

A strong earthquake hit Tibet (also known as the  Xizang Autonomous Region or Xizang) in southern China early today morning.  According to an assessment of the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the earthquake's intensity was measured at magnitude 6.9. However, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a lower intensity of magnitude 6.4. The epicentre of the quake, which struck minutes after 4 am (IST), was located close to the India-China border and was more than 150 kilometers away from the nearest Indian city.

Iran’s Olympic weightlifter auctions his gold medal for quake victims

The 7.3-magnitude quake that struck in the remote border area between Iran and Iraq late Sunday left thousands of people injured hundreds of villages destroyed. Iran's Olympic weightlifting champion Kianoush Rostami has put his gold medal up for auction to raise money for the victims of Sunday's earthquake which left at least 452 people dead in Iran and Iraq. The earthquake, the deadliest of the year, was felt as far away as Turkey and Pakistan. Rostami, who won gold at the Rio de Janeiro games in 2016, says the disaster has left him desperate to help those affected. "I consider it my duty to take a step, however small, to help my beloved fellow countrymen who have suffered as a result of the quake," Rostami said. "I am returning the gold medal, which is theirs by right, to my people. I will auction off the medal and use the proceeds to help the quake victims."

Earthquake of Magnitude 6.5 quake hits Costa Rica coast

A strong earthquake of 6.5 magnitude shook Costa Rica on Sunday night.The country's Public Safety Ministry said it had reports of two serious injuries as a result of the quake, but did not provide additional details. Electricity was knocked out in some areas as power lines and poles fell, but there were no reports of major infrastructure damage from the tremor, which hit in a lightly populated area along the Pacific Coast. The government reported some rockslides obstructing highways near the epicentre. The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was centered about 10 miles (15 kilometers) southeast of the town of Jaco, which is about 60 (100 kilometers) miles southwest of the capital, San Jose. The quake was at a depth of about 12 miles (20 kilometers). Four minutes after the initial earthquake, a magnitude 5.2 aftershock struck.

Earthquake of 7.3 magnitude hits Iran-Iraq border killing several people

A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit Iran and Iraq on Sunday killing 210 people, state media in the two countries said, as rescuers searched for dozens trapped under rubble. A quake registering a magnitude between 7 and 7.9 can inflict widespread and heavy damage. Moreover, many houses in rural areas of Iran are made of mud bricks that can crumble easily in a quake. Officials expected the casualty toll to rise when search and rescue teams reached remote areas of Iran. The earthquake was felt in several provinces of Iran but the hardest hit province was Kermanshah, which announced three days of mourning. The main hospital of the capital of the county was severely damaged and could not treat hundreds of injured people who were taken there, the head of the Iranian emergency services, Pirhossein Koulivand said.
