Hockey player body found in car

A 22-year-old hockey player allegedly shot himself outside the house of a female friend in Sarojini Nagar on Tuesday. The family of the deceased has alleged that their son was murdered, but the police said it appears to be a suicide.

Rizwan Khan, a second-year BA student at Jamia Millia Islamia, was found dead in his car, which was parked outside his friend’s house in GI-Block of Sarojini Nagar.

The family of the deceased claimed that Rizwan was a national-level player and had represented Delhi twice.

The police, however, said no certificates were shown by the family members to support this claim.

The police said that a call was received at 10.20 a.m. about a body inside a car.

“We found a country-made pistol in the right hand of the deceased. A bullet injury was found on the right temple. No suicide note was found on the spot,” said Romil Baaniya, DCP (South)

He added that a team of CFSL and FSL experts, including ballistic and biology division, have inspected the spot thoroughly.

“In the preliminary report and taking into account the circumstances, it appears to be a case of suicide. The police have initiated proceedings under Section 174 police to enquire and report on suicide of the CrPC and the body has been sent for post-mortem,” added Mr. Baaniya.

 During investigation, it was found that after leaving his house in Tihar village, Rizwan went to his friend’s house, where he met her cousin and dropped off a bag and phone.

Rizwan’s friend, who is also a hockey player, is out of the city on tour since the past fortnight.

The father of the deceased, Shareef Khan, said his son left the house at 12.30 p.m. on Monday in his car with ₹2 lakh in cash in a bag to buy a bike. Late in the evening, when he called Rizwan, his phone was switched off. He tried an alternate number, which was picked up by a girl.

“She did not reveal any details about Rizwan and did not give her address. After repeated attempts, the girl’s father picked up the phone and told me the address. I went to their house where the girl’s father handed over the bag of cash to me. He was also very curious about the bag,” said Mr. Khan.

The police might also question the cousin, who left the city early in the morning to play a hockey match, to know the reason for his alleged suicide.
